A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
