New research reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
